Discipline & Stewardship

Discipline

Discipline is any training intended to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior, especially training that produces moral, physical, or mental development in a particular direction.

Our founder, John Wesley, practiced a discipline of fasting each week, with expectation that his pastors and small group participants would do the same.  Whether we fast, live simply, retreat, worship, pray, or meditate, we experience God’s grace in the training of our physical, mental or spiritual lives. Discipline is not designed to make us feel guilty, but to train us, so that we can better worship God and minister to others.

I rarely discipline my body, mind, or spirit.

o   Participate in a short term small group study or a Sunday School class for nurture and accountability.

I have on occasion practiced discipline (through diet, exercise, regular devotions, monetary savings, fasting).

o   Utilize an exercise group, walking track or exercise room.

o   Attend Boundaries Small Group to learn boundaries for your life and others

I seek to practice a disciplined life to glorify God.

o   Practice a Wesleyan Fast

I seek to live a simple life so that I can give more to others.

o   Attend Financial Peace University.

I encourage others through grace and support to live a life of simplicity and discipline.

o   Start a Covenant Discipleship Small Group.

Stewardship

A steward is one who takes care of God’s resources.  The scriptures encourage us to not hide the resources God has entrusted to our care, but to multiply them to serve others.  As United Methodists, we commit to serve God with our prayers, presence, gifts and service.  At FUMC, we want to help you discover your Spiritual Gifts, have financial peace, and discern God’s call for you life.

I seldom consider how I can use the time, talents and treasure God has given to me for God’s purposes.

o   Discover the Spiritual Gifts God has given you.

I occasionally use the spiritual gifts God has given me for ministry in the church and I give regularly to the church and other charities.

o   Attend Financial Peace University

o   Attend Network Class

I frequently use the spiritual gifts God has given me for ministry in the church and am stepping up toward a tithe (giving 10 % of my income) to give to God’s offering.

o   Work toward a tithe by stepping up in percentage each year.

o   Attend a Focused Living Retreat to discern God’s call for your life

I consistently use the spiritual gifts God has given me for ministry in the church and I give a tithe (10% or more) of my income to God’s offering.

o   Give beyond the tithe through estate and planned giving

o   Give offerings to special and global needs beyond the tithe

o   Give to and/or volunteer with charities in our community

I help others to discover the joy of using the gifts God has given them for God’s
purposes.

o   Lead Financial Peace University or Network Short Term Class (Fall 2007, Winter/Spring 2008)

o   Participate as a table leader at a church wide retreat

o   Discern if God may be calling you to ordained ministry.
